Winter Pet Tips by the ASPCA

Brrrrrrr...
Yes it is getting cold outside and hopefully you are making every effort to keep fido safe and comfortable in the winter weather. Contrary to popular belief, pets need to be taken care of just like we humans do. Sheltered or indoor pets do not have a lot of the adaptations and "survival training" their ancestors did.

So, without further ado, here are a few guidelines from the ASPCA to keeping your pups safe and warm this December.

  • Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm. Dogs frequently lose their scent in snow and ice and easily become lost. They may panic in a snowstorm and run away. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season.
  • Thoroughly wipe off your dog’s legs and stomach when she comes in out of the rain, snow or ice. Check her sensitive paw pads, which may bleed from snow or ice encrusted in them. Also, salt, antifreeze or other chemicals could hurt your dog if she ingests them while licking her paws. "I'd love to add here that this is extremely important! My family once had a kitten who mistakenly licked up some anti-freeze. A few days later she was not feeling well and had to take her to the pet hospical where she died. This is absolutely vital so pay attention!" -Andra
  • If you own a short-haired breed, consider getting a warm coat or sweater for your dog. Look for one with a high collar or turtleneck that covers your dog from the base of her tail on top and to the belly underneath. While this may seem like a luxury, it is a necessity for many dogs.
  • If you own a short-haired breed, consider getting a warm coat or sweater for your dog. Look for one with a high collar or turtleneck that covers your dog from the base of her tail on top and to the belly underneath. While this may seem like a luxury, it is a necessity for many dogs.
  • Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold. Your companion animal could freeze to death.
  • Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If necessary, paper train your puppy inside if he appears to be sensitive to the weather.
  • Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter. Leave the coat in a longer style, which provides more warmth. Remember that such a style will require more frequent brushing due to dry winter air and static electricity. When you bathe your dog, make sure she is completely dry before you take her out for a walk.
  • Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep far away from all drafts and off the floor, such as in a dog or cat bed or basket with a warm blanket or pillow in it.

Keep everyone in your family safe this winter, including your pet pals.

Merry Christmas!

Thanksgiving Print

Alright, I recently found this fabric and LOVE it, but I would like to know what you think.

Some of my favorite fabrics have this doodling design (like this one) and it always seems that I gravitate toward these "cute-sy" patterns. Now, I want ya'll's take on it.
Absolutely Adorable? or No Way?

Customs- Walker Valley

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to remind you that not all of my products are listed on Etsy.com
Although some favorite prints are listed, like our Doggy Doodles print (https://www.etsy.com/listing/159434945/small-medium-or-large-tie-free-pet?ref=shop_home_active), our most popular, custom bandannas, are not listed. You will have to contact me personally to order one.

That being said, here is my latest creation. Someone from my brother's boy scout troop wanted a large bandanna with their high school letters on it. The "WV" are for Walker Valley High School.

What do you think?

Mixed Breeds

Some people call them "mutts." Others, "mixed breeds." There supposed to be called, "non-pedigree," but now days, these mixes are being considered real dog breeds or pedigrees.
When I recently asked someone what kind of dog they had, they answered, "a cock-a-poo." Part of me wanted to say, "Bless you." These, silly-sounding mixes are growing in popularity and part of it may be because of their fun names.
Here are three of these mixes that I have heard of.
Cock-a-poo (Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix)
Labradoodle (Labrador Retriever and Poodle mix),
and Morkies (Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier mix).

These names almost beg the question, what other breeds can we think up. For example, I would call a poodle-yorkie mix, a porkie? :)

Can you think of any funny dog mixes?

Autumn Is Here

Autumn is here and with it comes, you guessed it, school.
Unfortuanatly, with school starting and my family trying to put our house on the market, I have been unable to head down to the local farmer's market to meet you guys and give you a chance to see my products but I am glad to announce that Doggy 'Dannas will be starting a new marketing technique.
Most people, when they get their dogs groomed, love to use ribbons, bows, and bandannas on their pets and, Lord willing, they will soon have a chance to check out our amazing, handmade dog bandannas.

I am so excited about getting the word out about Doggy 'Dannas. Speaking of which, have to told someone today? :)

Sleeping Anywhere

This just goes to show you that dogs can sleep almost anywhere! My dog loves anything soft, and when he discovered my velvet lined guitar case, he was asleep in mere moments. Before he discovered this new bed, he tried to climb into my lap, but decided that he wouldn't like to share it with an acoustic guitar. Dejectedly he crawled into the velvet cloud and promptly drifted off.

Who's Best Friend?

Take a moment and ponder one of the deepest mysteries on this earth.

Is dog man's best friend, or is man dog's best friend?

What do you think?

Attention!

Our summer sale is drawing to a close and as such, I feel I must warn you.

"And thus, a great season draws to a close
with the unbearable autumn of ending sales.
Doth these events have to end?
Canst thou bear such a tremendous load?
Wilt thee wait forever until thine animals go unclothed?"

Seriously now, our summer sale will be ending after August first so now is the time to place your order and, "get 'er done," as my dad would say.

Coming Soon

With school starting, last minute vacation Bible schools, and fall sports, you have probably been about as busy as we have!
This fall, Doggy 'Dannas will be featuring two brand-new bandanna prints, Acorns in Autumn and Candy Corn Craze!

Acorns in Autumn has a soft, mud brown base covered in whimsical orange and yellow leaves and medium-dark brown acorns. Available in any size, these bandannas would be ideal for a black or cream-colored dog.

Candy Corn Craze features a bright sugary, Halloween treat with orange, green, and purple polka-dots sprinkled in between. The black background creates a sharp contrast on light or medium colored dogs. Get your pup in on the fun without messing with aggravating pet costumes!

Don't forget, our small bandannas fit your average house cat so even Kitty can join the fun!

Bat Dog?

"Folks who make and sell Halloween costumes have a most unlikely target customer this year: Fido.
More precisely, dog owners. Spending on Halloween costumes for pets -- mostly dogs, but occasionally cats --will hit a record $370 million this year, up nearly 20% from last year's $310 million, reports the National Retail Federation.
Sales of pet costumes, though still relatively small, are the industry's fastest-growing area. They're up double-digits the past three years in a row at Rubie's Costume, says Howard Beige, executive vice president.
'Dogs are getting as many popular-character licenses as kids,' he says.
Costume makers say the Spot-on trend for dogs this year is the wave of new, licensed costumes for pets -- such as dogs dressed as giant Tootsie Rolls, Heinz ketchup bottles or, for the more heroic canines, Bat Dog. Many of these costumes fetch close to $20 each.
'People just don't skimp on their pets,' says Michael Gatti, executive director of the National Retail Federation's marketing arm. 'They'll cut corners on themselves, but not on their pets.'"

I love dogs in hats as much as the next pet lover, but I have to admit, we over-do it way too easily.

Most dogs have to be taught not to chew their collars, harnesses, and clothes, why? Because it is their natural instinct. They were not born with a collar around their neck or harness around their middle so they have to be trained to ignore it, this same principle applies to clothes. Animals have to be trained not to tear up their "accessories." Teaching can take time, time spent in frustration that could have just as easily been spent in enjoyment with your family. So instead of giving you and your pet a headache, leave the Bat Dog costumes at the store!

Plans, Ideas, and Farmers Markets

For years I dreamed of having my own business, and, funny thing about dreams, I always thought it would be easy, perfect, that everything that I did would be a wonderful success. Unfortunately, that dream was an impossibility.
That being said, my attempt at selling pet bandannas and "Owner Accessories" at Bradley County Farmer's Market North was utterly fruitless. I figured it would be slow but I quickly learned that few people came to this farmer's market as compared to the older one in the center of town. Considering this I also figured out that the people who came in were mostly older people who did not have any pets. For a while I considered going back the next Saturday and trying again, but to what end? The people coming in were not the target market.
Several ideas went through my mind, but eventually I decided to try the farmers market in the center of town. A family we know comes recently began coming to the market and offered to share a space with us and we accepted. Starting this Thursday, we will be teaming up with this family to sell next to the Five Point Museum in downtown Cleveland, TN. If you would like to drop by and check us out, feel free!

All of that aside, I would like to ask our readers/customers for some suggestions for our business. Do you have an idea on ways to sell or posts for our website. Please, feel free to comment on this post and let us know.

Employees from  Doggy 'Dannas will be in Ramblewood Circle's (Cleveland, TN) annual Independence day parade!

Some of my family and friends will be there and my little puppy and I will certainly be there! If you haven't picked up a bandanna for your cook out, this would be a great time to check them out!
The parade starts at 10:00 am. So come and check it out!

Don't forget, our Fourth of July prints can also be worn for Memorial Day and Labor Day!

Great Doggie Doos

If your looking for a place to board your dog over summer vacation, I highly recommend Great Doggy Doos in Cleveland. I personally know the owners and have taken my dog over there several times.
When we first got our dog, my family and I had some friends of ours pet sit while we were away. For a while, it worked out really well. We were happy to let him stay with someone we trusted and he seemed content in playing with their puppy and song bird.
After a few trips, our friends asked us to return the favor while they went camping for a week and a half.  Perhaps we weren't prepared for a high-energy puppy or perhaps we had gotten used to a quiet, obedient dog, whatever it was, we were all exhausted at the end of the week and a half. Our family loves animals, but over the course of eleven days, we discovered that we were not meant to be in the dog-sitting business.
When we decided to go on another trip, we all begged our mother and father to do something different with the dog. Knowing we could not handle another day watching any more dogs, pups or otherwise, she looked into boarding. Being friends with the owners, we decided to try Great Doggy Doos, and have not gone anywhere else.

Check into them, you'll be glad you did.

To Use, or Not to Use. That Is the Question.

Okay, I absolutely love the colors in this fabric but I can't decide whether or not to use it. I am opening it up to you guys for discussion. Totally cute or super weird? Leave a comment and let me know. Here is a picture:

My Dog / Model / Inspiration / Blessing

I can remember begging my dad for years, "Can we please get a dog?" The conversations always ended with a "no" and a list of reasons why. I understood why he felt a dog was not right for our family, but at the same time still yearned to have my own. Having two cats could be a challenge at times, but it was not a "rewarding" or "exciting" as having a dog appeared to be. I believed that dogs always love you but cats can take you or leave you.
Eventually, I began to see that God might have something different in store for our family. As I read the Scriptures and began to be convicted to honor my parents, I started to lay aside my desire for a dog. When I laid the matter to rest, it turned out to be the beginning.
A friend of mine had recently had an accident and her Morkie ended up dying. Shortly after the incident her mother found another Morkie puppy that I fell in love with as soon as I saw him. After a few days, my friend decided to look for another dog and sell the Morkie (Calvin). By this time, my dad's heart had softened and... well, you can guess what our family got for Christmas.

I thank the Lord for allowing me to take care of this special pup. God has blessed me with so much, sometimes it's best to start thanking Him for the little things.
